    After the Franco-Syrian treaty of 1937 which provided for the inclusion of Alexandrette in the Syrian State, there were strong protests from Turkey and local riots. Agreement was reached on 3rd July 1938 for elections under Franco-Turkish supervision and on 2nd September 1938 the elected assembly voted for the establishment of an autonomous republic of Hatay. Stamps were issued in early 1939 and on 23rd June, France agreed to the incorporation of Hatay into Turkey with effect from 30th June 1939. These stamps were not recognised by France. These short lived stamps are cancelled Southampton Paquebot 21st April 1939.
